Neuhaus (Wfl).

The folowing pieces were issued in Neuhaus (Westfalen). Interestingly, there is an information sheet that was also issued with the notgeld so it is good for collectors to try and get an example of this for their collection. They don't seem to be too common though!

b. The Senne Camp at Neuhaus. The “Senne Spirit” which hovers above it received its name because this protector of military standing orders would come whizzing over wherever irregularities or dereliction of duty occurred. The word “Senne Ghost” was further used to describe the spirit of discipline, of order and of duty which always ruled over the camp, hence the saying :

O “Spirit of Old”, come ye back again.                                                (Contemporary)

NB The 5-Mark note has been issued but only as a very limited edition. It shows the unique Heroes’ Cemetery of the community of Neuhaus and its counterpart the French Cemetery in the Senne Camp and a gorgeous poem which closes with the moving complaint :

“Come fetch, o France, thy dead,

And give us back in return our living!”

                                                               Avignon.

The Notgeld of the Avignon Prisoners is also being despatched from Neuhaus!

Orders will be taken in all Notgeld dealerships and in the Community Finance Office at Neuhaus, the notes will also be despatched by

[Translations of Neuhaus Notgeld texts and comments]

The reverse of the 50 Pfennig (a) note :

The first post to Vienna and Amsterdam from Neuhaus its beginning took. – And folk also needed a great deal of time for their journey, - This much is clear! - - it was much cheaper than today. - -

The yellow of the post coach and the black post-horn are still today the colour and the emblem of the Deutsche Post.

The reverse of the 50 Pfennig (b) note :

Troop training and parade ground Senne Camp 1892 – 1921

Here hovered about us all the Senne Spirit! –

Cheerfully we sang our songs! O come ye back,

You happy time. O “Spirit of Old”, come ye back again

The red storm cloud chasing away the old Senne Spirit, with its ominous date 9.11.18, surely refers to the mutinies and Red Revolution which toppled the German monarchies and caused the Kaiser to abdicate on 9th November 1918. The figure of the Sennegeist is a German officer on horseback in parade dress, with red-striped officer’s trousers and the distinctive Pickelhaube spiked helmet. Interestingly, though, the whiskers and forked beard of the Spirit in no way suggests that the model is Kaiser Wilhelm II (clean-shaven with spiked moustaches), nor his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm I (thick moustache and dundrearies), nor his father Friedrich III, who briefly as a younger man had a (less spectacularly) forked beard but as emperor a bushy full set, and as a general in the Franco-Prussian War a short and curly version following the contours of the face. It in fact looks like Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz (whose beard forks were admittedly spikier), but, as an Admiral of the Fleet, Tirpitz would have worn a very different uniform.

The Senne Camp is named after the old Prussian site called the Senne. It isn’t the Alpine meadow which the word Senne means in southern Germany today, but derives from the old Low German word sinedi meaning “sandy (ground)”.

After the Battle in the Teutoberg Forest

ANNO DOMINI 9 after Christ’s birth

When Hermann had driven off the Romans, Thusnelda called : “Now let them flee. Don’t follow them. Now Hermann don’t be a fool, now take me up to Neuhaus Castle.

The text below the picture is in the Westphalian dialect of the Sauerland and takes a lot of deciphering! Interesting are the signposts in Latin, Via Aliso (Towards Aliso) and Via Sinedi (Towards the Senne); the conceit is that the old Low German sinedi might have an older, Latin etymology (it hasn’t). Aliso has been identified as the Roman legionary fort at Unna.

The reverse of the 2 mark note :

Dr Sertürner

Your grave scattered to the winds, /

Your work will remain /

As long as the Earth stands.

O send us Lord, in our time of trial

Such men of good old-fashioned character.
