It is with great sadness, that today (2nd Dec) I have learnt of the passing of my great notgeld friend, Anton Geiger. Anton was the friendliest of people and always helped me aquire notgeld I was searching for. He was able to give direction to my collecting and answers to all my questions. Anton was a notgeld expert and some of you will surely have his catalogue in your libraries? Again, the notgeld world has lost another expert, friend and colleague. I often bought notgeld from Anton, especially when I met up with him in Valkenburg. He would hand over a large packet of notes I had previously bought from him and we would chat about them and why I had wanted them so much. We corresponded regularly and as he spoke English, he was a great person to chat to about anything ‘notgeld’. R.I.P Anton – thoughts are now with his friends and family. The notgeld world, has in the past few years, unfortunately lost some irreplaceable experts. All their works/catalogues will be treasured so much more, in the future.
The current Teutoburger auction has some lovely notgeld for sale. Included is a wonderful and scarce collection of kapselgeld – encased postage pieces with advertising on the back. At a starting price of only 6000 euros, I am intrigued to see what the collection goes for. It was built up by a German collector who lived in the States. Some very rare and scarce pieces of kapsel geld are included within the collection. I think someone may end up with a real bargain here!! I don’t understand why the auction house is selling the whole lot as one collection though. More money would surely be achieved for the seller, by breaking the collection into smaller and separate lots??
Kapselgeld are about the size of an old UK penny. The advertising covers different topics from drinks and liqueurs to pens and cutlery. The encased postage stamp gave the piece their face value. The stamps can be of 5 different kinds with different coloured card backings too. Its another specific collector area. Here are a few examples of kapselgeld:
