Niederlahnstein – 50pf (1917)

Description

Niederlahnstein – 50pf piece dating from 1917 with an interesting story behind it. The graphic on the obverse shows an old paddle-steamer and the reverse has a building with 2 pictures of food, a ham and some turnips, either side of it. If you look closer at the reverse side, the ‘background’ is made up of circles with the words ‘STADT NIEDERLAHNSTEIN 1917’. However, studying it further there are 2 circles which state something different……..in English these translate as ‘Tender longing, sweet hope‘ & ‘Thus we live, thus we live‘. The piece is in ‘au-unc’ condition. This is a memorable piece and would make a great addition to your notgeld collection. (I have circled the 2 circles which have the different wordings) – this is a hidden political comment by the artist about the actual state of the economy at this time (1917). There was a great shortage of food!
