Thanks marcel – I have added this to the ‘VARIANT GEMS’ file – which I will update in 2030!! Not worth updating the publication before that as there are so many examples already listed. :good:

    Hi Gustavo!

I collected all types of notgeld …….1914, verkehrsausgaben, serienscheine, Grossgeld, Inflation1923 etc…….and unlike John, I kept all my pieces in the albums, alphabetically as far as I could. I had different documents (WORD) for the category listings themselves but as I say, when I received notgeld additions I always placed the notes alphabetically in my notgeld albums. This worked for me but may not have been the best way for some. I liked the fact that, for a good example, the Altrahlstedt notgeld (serienscheine, Inflation 1922 and Inflation 1923) all sat together. Each collector will find the best way for themselves. John’s albums and documentation are superb, I can say that! Like John, I think your labels looking terrific too! :good:

    Hello John,

Thank you so much for the reply.

I really apreciate your point of view and it makes total sense to me.

Helped me a lot to give order to my collection, and I agree that organizing and reorganizing it, gives a great pleasure.

    Thank you.

    Hi Gustavo,

I totally admire the quality of the album tags you’ve produced!  They look so very 1920s and so appropriate to the collection.

My albums are organised according to the periods of Notgeld, so I have albums for First World War issues, Grossgeld, Verkehrsausgaben, Serienscheine, Inflation notes and Fixed-Value issues.  I’ve organised the First World War, Grossgeld, Inflation and Fixed value albums according to date, because I like the narrative that they give.  With the Verkehrsausgaben and Serienscheine I’ve divided the albums by historical region, as I enjoy comparing and tracing motifs locally;  I don’t therefore tend to separate German issues from those of towns and districts which have later become Polish / Russian / Danish as the result of plebiscites, conquests and treaties.  However, I do add the contemporary Polish / Russian / Danish names in brackets in my album frontsheets.

As for flags,  I must admit that my albums are also identified by the colours of the individual historical states (e.g. blue-and-white for Bavaria, gold-and-white for Hannover, different permutations of green-and-white for the Saxonies etc), mainly out of personal preference.

As my collection has grown over the last 18 years, I’ve re-organised it several times, which has been a source of great pleasure.  However you organise (and re-organise) your collection, I wish you every joy with it.

    Hi Jack,

the Aschaffenburg note’s text is :  Fünf Mark zahlt die Kämmereikasse der Stadt Aschaffenburg dem Inhaber bei Präsentation innerhalb der öffentlich bekannt gegebenen Wiedereinlieferungsfrist, mit deren Umlauf der Gutschein verfällt.

It translates as : The Finance Department of the town of Aschaffenburg will pay the bearer five marks upon presentation within the redemption period as made public, with the expiration of which the voucher loses its validity.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes as always,

I did some tags for my collection, like the image bellow, but for example Augustenburg is German/Denmark.
Should I remake the tags and add small flags into them?

    Any ideas are welcome.

    Hello there.

    I have a question please.

How do you catalog your own albuns of Notgelds?
Only alphabetical? or use the Deutsches Notgeld catalogs and make them alphabetical but separete them by serienscheine, grossgeld and so on?

Also when theres for example German/Denmark or russian, do you put them in a diferent section of your albuns?

    Thank you.

    Best regards

    Gustavo

    THALE

This article gives a overview of the most issued Serienscheine of the city Thale in the Harz. It is a tourist city for nature lovers and hikers. The Harz is a very rough piece in east of Germany. The region is therefore also impregnated with fairy tales and other mysteries. All those are seen on the notes of Thale. But not only for the beautiful notes you see that Thale has many series who looks alike and has many issued notes with “mistakes, misprints or variations”. (All pictures are of my private collection except “backsite postcard size” is from the internet.)

The first issue of Thale Stadt in Serienscheine: 10 Pfennig. Notice the greenish notes above are the front and the back. The note below is black and white AND with a stamp “20. Febr.”. There is also a note 10 Pf. also in black and white, but without a stamp.

    THALE

The 25 Pfennig note of “Walpurgis” is only with the intake date and in green. I think there was a deficiency in the 25 Pfennig notes (or a printing error).

The 50 Pfennig note is (reissued design) for a new serie, but notice with a only the intake date, a blueish denomination and like the first issue of the Serienscheine of Thale Stadt

A nice “misprint”of the 50 Pfennig in the serie of “Walpurgis”: notice the nomination 50 (Pfennig). The note above is the normal printing and the note below, the 50 has shifted to the left (printing plate error?)

    Ello all,

Aschaffenburg.  That is the name of the next town.  This is a five mark note that is not in the books I do have.  the translations I managed have a lot of the phrase, but something not fully right about it.

    here it goes:

Zahlt die kammereikasse der Stadt Aschaffenburg dein Inhaber bei Präsentation innerhalb der öffentlich bekannt gegebenen Miedereinlieferungfrist mit deren Areleuf der Gutschein verlullt.

    (translated 28 June 2020)

If the owner of the city of Aschaffenburg pays the owner at the presentation within the publicly announced corselet delivery period, the voucher will be canceled by Areleuf.

‘corselet’ and ‘Areleuf’ are the words confusing me already.

    thanks, Jack

    Ello all,

Finally found time to escape work long enough to finish Allstedt.  I find it interesting that they chose to honor Philip, a King who seemed to accomplish little and was murdered just as he was about to triumph in the one struggle that defined his reign.

    THALE, original design (Verkehrsausgaben)

Front of the 50 Pfennig, issued in 1917 in the serie of 10, 25 and 50 Pfennig. They look very similar with the later reissued notes. Look carefully: the red sign on the front is the seal of Thale. The later issued notes have a rosette. The 1917’s notes have a serial number on the back. This serie is issued in two runs: The first one has a smal serial number (4,5 mm narrow, Typ II) and the second run a larger number (5,5 mm wide, Typ I) and on the front lower right corner “Neudruck.”.

    THALE

Thale issued many Serienscheine series and one is a strange kind: “Ersatznotgeld auf Formularen fuer Wegeunterhaltungsbeitraege” (“Substitute emergency allowance on forms for road maintenance contributions”). When you see the forms they are a tourist tax to maintain the footpaths. The Harz is and was a popular and rough region in the east of Germany for hikers and Thale one of the main starting places.

But the question is: why the 50 Pfennig note (with stamp and talon) is Notgeld and where you can use it?

There are sets of serienscheine pieces that have been issued in different sizes……..Hasloh & Kurzenmoor, for example but I think it is unusual for the 2 verkehrsausgaben you mention. There is always something a bit ‘unusual’!! :good:

I have been adding artist names to the article and just found the signature & inter-twinned initials ‘GS’ for Georg Schleinitz, on serienscheine from Herne :yahoo:

    Hi David,

You surprised me too! It looks like a Serienschein, but nothing in my collection. I have the very nice catalog by Tieste; “”Katalog Kleingeldersatz aus Papier “Verkehrsausgaben”, 1915 – 1922″” (two volumes). There it was: Sonneberg (#6985  .15 and .20). The two notes have the same date, but Tieste says: the smaller note has a “format change”. The smaller note is the second issuance. You can see that the serial number are 6 digits (the larger note 5 digits)  and the value in the catalog is: Euro 6 for the larger note and Euro 3 for the smaller. This points out that the smaller note has a larger printrun. And I think the small note reduced the costs (less paper, less ink …..)

Every note has his own story!

    Hallo!

I like to collect different themes of notgeld, and a favorite is Christmas themed Seriencheine. Two of the notes I have is from Sonneberg and depict a nice nutcracker. The first not I had was a ‘normal’ sized notgeld, but I just received one that is a much smaller size, as you can see in the attached photo. The size is not too odd as this series has some that are about the same size, but of different designs.

As I have only these two notes, I was wondering if anyone knew if one of these is a variant or was there a printing error? I have not seen such a case of a size difference variant before, but then I am far from any expert in Notgeld – or much else!  As such I do not know much about printing methods, but I would imagine it would be difficult to have reduced the image size in a printing press from the 1920’s, would it not?

Anyone know more? Does anyone have this note, and if so, is yours a ‘normal’ size (86mm x 57mm) or smaller (57mm x 37mm)?

    Sonneberg Notgeld - Nutckracker note

Here is something that hopefully, every member can help me with please. I have added more than 100 notgeld artists to that specific article (under serienscheine/people/notgeld artists). Could you all take a look please ……..and for now, send any artist name that isn’t on the list that you can find AT LEAST 2 different sets or pieces of please. Thanks in advance. This will be a long project but some of the initials and unknown names may eventually come to light.

Please don’t bombard me with lots and lots of names…..there must be at least another hundred out there……..no rush here……1 every now and again is best for me please!! The notgeld issue (series or piece) can just be named with Lindman number or Grabowski number please and I can get back to you if I need a scan. Hope that makes it easy for everyone to get involved here. :bye: :good: :bye:

This overprinted (OVP) note arrived here today. It has one of the best raised stamp marks I have ever seen. The overprints are some of the most interesting types you can collect. Originally issued with a face value of 5 marks, it has been re-valued/overprinted to 10,000,000,000 mark!

    Hi Jack,

The Allstedt town hall note translates as : “The town hall has a tower, / which overlooks the entire town” (Einen Turm das Rathaus hat / der überragt die ganze Stadt).  The word order is unusual but subject to poetic inversion (“A tower the town hall has …”).

The Rohne Gate (Rohnetor) is portrayed “after a drawing by Goethe” (nach einer Zeichnung von Goethe).  The gate in the town’s walls lets out onto the bridge over the River Rohne, upon which Allstedt is the only town.  The couplet reads : “The Rhone flows by France’s meadows / But the Rohne only flows at Allstedt” (Die Rhone fliesst auf Frankreichs Flur, / Die Rohne doch bei Allstedt nur).

    Hope this helps!

    Best wishes,

Smen Turm das Rathaus hat der überragt errafgt die ganze Stadt
    (translated 06 May 2020)
Smen tower has towered over the city hall and is towering over the whole city
<<<cannot properly read first word, possibly a name?>>>

    BREMEN, Borgfelder Landhaus

In april 2023 a landmark is demolished in the Serienscheine landscape. It makes place for a building for refugees. The old Borgfelder Landhaus has a history that goes back to the 17th century as a beer bar. In the 19th century it was a customs office. In the 20th century it was famous as a stage for legendary performances of the Bremen beat music scene. Before the turn of the millennium the Borgfelder Landhaus started a brewery with Borgfelder Ürtrub and Lilienthaler Dunkel.

The also traditional restaurant lay on the river Wümme on the border of Borgfeld (Bremen) and Lilienthal (Lower Saxony).

Translation text (in low German) backside: “If the rooster crows in the mist, than the weather changes, or it stays as it is.” and  “Owner Hans Kolloge”

Hi Jack, hope that your car worries sort themseleves out soon.  It’s been 34 years since I last worked at Mercedes-Benz, so I’m afraid I can’t help with that.

However, I can help with the translation of the Latin text beneath the portrait of Thomas Münzer, based on  a 1608 engraving by Christoffel Van Sichern. It identifies him as “a native of the county of Stolberg, minister at Allstedt, most fanatical leader and captain of the traitorous peasants, decapitated in the year 1525” (STOLBERGENSIS PASTOR ALSTED ARCHIFANATICUS PATRONUS ET CAPITANEUS SEDITIOSORUM RUSTICORUM DECOLLATUS Anno 1525).

    Best wishes as always!

    Ello all:

I will start by saying I expect every note I will be asking about is likely common enough that most collectors will have at least three in a duplicate pile someplace in their home.  Sould a note note be so common, I will try to figure out how to place an image.

    town: Allstedt

    mehl: 15.1

this series has a couple of textual quotes that confuse me.  They are the same on the 10 and 25 pfg notes, located just below the portrait of Thomas Munzer.

STO LB ERGENSIS PASTOR A LSTED ARCHIFANATICUS PATRONUS EL CAPITANEUS SEDITIOSORUM RUSTICORUM DECOLLATUS Anno 1525

    (translated 29 March 2020)

FOLLOW LE ERGENSIS past a lsted ARCHIFANATICUS EL PATRON CAPITAL Inflammatory RUSTICORUM decollate in the year 1525

    thanks for any thoughts

    Jack

Quite useful.  What is not useful is my car dying and the replacement used car having more issues than the final exam vehicle in an automotive program.  None the less I am back.

FYI – I have just published my latest notgeld book, ‘VARIANT GEMS’ on the LuLu (online publisher and printer site) website.  :yahoo: Link can be found from the homepage ‘My Books’ section at the top. Just over 600 pages, it details lots of variants to be a ware of and will hopefully teach a lot of collectors the types of things they need to be looking at and comparing. It was a learning curve for me too – there were several design differences that I was totally unaware of before embarking on this project. The variants are catalogued but some are quite difficult to understand, especially if you don’t speak German. I hope my GNCC collector colleagues find the publication helpful and thought provoking. :good:

I never properly realised what a beautiful piece the 20pf note is from Stuetzerbach, drawn/designed by Max Bechstein. (I’ve been adding a few different artists to the ‘artists’ post, recently, which is why this note is on my mind.) Bechstein was not a professional artist but was the city architect for Ilmenau.

I did a bit of Notgeld tourism recently.  My addition to this topic is a bit sad, though.  The note is the reverse of a 25 Pfennig from Düren.  It shows the town Wasserturm.  The tight view doesn’t show a beautiful fountain that was in front of it.

Unfortunately the water tower -and the majority of Düren- was destroyed in WWII.  The Platz is still there, but today it is just an open grassy area.

Hi Jack,  sorry for the lack of immediate reply; I’m in Venice for my wife’s big birthday this week and haven’t been in Notgeld mode.
The Fem Linde is the “Linden Tree of the Court”; the local assizes of the District of Winzenburg (including Alfeld, Röllinghausen, Hörsum, Langenholzen, Sack, Eimsen and Wettensen) took place here from ancient times until the 17th century.
It seems that there was one a coppice of linden trees where the courts held session, and that one of them survived until at least the 1920s, to be known as the “Fem Linde”.
The word “Fehme” (here in a variant spelling, “Fem”) usually refers to the secret, semi-official, semi-vigilante courts of Westphalia.  Although the word is used here, it seems that the courts held in Alfeld beneath the linden trees observed what we would recognise as due process.  They do not appear to have had the right to pronounce sentence of death.

The text around the picture reads : “Be peaceful and live with each other in brotherly love.” Perhaps a gentle warning to potential offenders.

Hope that this is helpful. 😀

    Ello All;

This evening I would like to look at the 25 pfg note from Alfeld an der Leine.  It is Mehl 11.1.  I suspect it is common enough to be in most collections, so I will save bandwith.

It is the term ‘fem linde’.   It is the smallest text on the coat of arms.

    Thanks, all,

    Hi Jack,

The notes from Aken on the Elbe are very striking in terms of colour and detail.  The obverse sides show the ancient seal of the town, with the Latin inscription + SIGNETUM · BURGENSIUM · URBIS · AQUENSIS · FIDELIS · FILIAE · ECCLESIAE ·  MAGDEBURGENSIS (“Seal of the citizens and town of Aken, faithful daughter of  the Church at Magdeburg”); from 1389 Aken owed fealty to the Archbishop of Magdeburg.  The central image is of a bishop standing on a stone pedestal underneath a gateway formed by two towers, each with an arrow-slit in the central floor, and roofed with an ornate arch bearing a cross.  The bishop is raising his right hand in blessing, holding an episcopal cross in his left and wearing a mitre and a robe known as a dalmatic (as worn by King Charles at his coronation, otherwise reserved for bishops and – in simpler forms – deacons). On either side is a shield bearing the arms of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg (red over white), and fronted by the head of a Moor, representing the North African Saint Maurice of the Theban Legion.  Magdeburg Cathedral was built on the site of an earlier Abbey of St Maurice and the saint remains one of the cathedral’s patrons.

To look in detail at your questions :

The Cöthen Gate (Cöthener Tor) and the Elbe Gate (Elbtor) were gatehouses in the town walls, one of which led out on the road to nearby Cöthen (today : Köthen) and the other on to the bridge over the River Elbe. Stretches of the town walls, which date back to before 1335, still exist, as does the Cöthener Tor, built in 1551 on the site of an earlier gatehouse.  It is about 25 meters / 75 feet high and since 1900 the north and south sides boast a clock (as on the note).  It was restored in 1996.  Of the other three tower gates, the Dessauer Tor survives as does the Burgtor (Castle Gate), the one that would have linked the town to the castle of Gloworp from which the town grew.  As for the Elbtor, there is a mention of it being depicted in the ceiling frescos of the town councillors’ beer cellar, from which the illustration on the note may derive;  otherwise, I’m afraid I can’t find and evidence of when it was destroyed or demolished.

On the note with the riverside scene, the text reads :

Früher warst im ganzen Land / Als Kuh-Aken du bekannt. / Geändert hat sich heut die Zeit, / Kur-Aken heißt du weit u. breit.

(You used to be known in the whole country / As the cow-town of Aken. / Today times have changed, / You are known far and wide as Electoral Aken).

In other words, Aken used to be known as a “one-horse town” a provincial backwater.  Today it’s famous and has a regal title derived from it being a town of the Princes Elector of Brandenburg (NB this may be wishful thinking rather than reality).  The sentiment is reflected in the verse on the gatehouse note :

In Aken hat man einst gesagt, / Is nix to maken!  Gott sei’s geklagt! / Das Wort gilt lange schon nicht mehr, / Es blühn Gewerbe und Verkehr.  / Drum heißt es jetzt von Aken  : / Mit dick lett sick was maken!

(In Aken people used to say, / there’s nothing to be done!  / Let us shout our woe to the Lord! / No one keeps their word any more!/  [But now] industry and trade are flourishing.  / And so Aken now has the reputation : / We can do good business with you!)

Both texts are comparing a less-than-golden past with a thriving present.

On the 75-Pfennig note with the town hall, the text reads :

Niemand soll vor den Rat noch Schöffen- / bank hintreten mit Barden, Messern oder / unvernünftigen Worten bei der Stadt Buße.

(No one should appear before the council nor the magistrates’ bench with axes or knives nor unreasonable words, upon punishment dictated by the town ordinances).

Barden” is a very old German word for axes; it appears in the German word Hellebarde, and is the source of the second syllable in the English word for the pole-arm which is part axe, part spear, and part hook : halberd.

“Buße” does mean penance, but also punishment.  On-the-spot fines issued by German police officers today are referred to in journalese and other contexts as Bußgelder.

Hope that this is helpful.  Happy collecting and best wishes!

    Greetings all.

I have some questions on some notes from Alen /Elbe.  As these, indeed all the notes i will ask questions on are remarkably common, I will not spend Tony’s bandwidth with them unless it is needed.

With these notes I need help with a couple of places on the notes, plus some translation aid.  I have transcribed the note as best i could read it and the translations as i have managed thus far, admittedly with google translate.

The gates or towers Cothener Tor and Elbtor are shown.  However I cannot find anything about them.  Is anything beyond the fact they existed and looked something like this known?

Next there is a bit of translation confusion.

    <><><>

    50 Pfennig, 01 Oktober 1921, Füher warst:

    Früher warst im ganzen Land,

    Als Kuh Aken du bekannt.

Geändert hat sich heut die Zeit,

Kur Aken heißt du weit u. breit.

    (translated on 19 March, 2020)

You used to be across the country

    Time has changed today

You are known as Cow Aken

You are called Kur Aken far and wide

‘Kuh’ I believe translates to cow.  It’s usage here confuses me.  Also, is ‘Kur’ cow another form?

    <><><>

    75 Pfenning, 01 Oktober 1921, Rathaus:

Niemand soll vor den Rat noch Schöffenbank hin treten mit Barden, Messern oder unvernünftigen Worten bei der Stadt Buße

    (translated on 17 March, 2020)

Nobody should step in front of the councilor’s bench with bards, knives or unreasonable words at the city of penance

<<not sure about the use of the word ‘penance’ here>>

    Thanks,

    Jack

The level of illustration and detail is awe-inspiring, the concordance of Lindman and G/M at a glance is super-helpful, the translation of so much down to the names for the watermarks is an added level of interest and essential for non-German speakers who are saved hours of dictionary work.  Thanks too for the kind mention in the acknowledgements :)!  Too kind!  And not to forget : the presentation and quality of the binding and paper and the size and the layout all make this gorgeous publication a very attractive must-have.  Many congratulations on such a fantastic feat!

There are some very interesting pieces shown here which are thought provoking.

I guess we need to get similar pieces and compare them. I have an album full of ‘muster’/specimen pieces I have been collecting over the years. If there were ‘unissued’ pieces that were then cancelled, they would look exactly like specimen pieces – no serials and a cancelleation. Hopefully that would have been written about though in the local newspaper and to date, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Kai Lindman verified the majority of my pieces through the years as genuine so I’m happy for that. My Wernigerode piece………now I can’t check with him of course! I’m dubious but it was in a group of other ‘normal’ pieces…..

I hadn’t seen your pieces before but they are sure to be ‘copied’ in the future – too easy to add a punch hole to any ‘common’ notgeld piece. A stamp mark should be a bit easier to check (type and ink etc.?)

The Neustadt stamp mark looks ‘wonky’ to my eye…..not 100% straight, so it could be a made up stamp??

    Hallo Krs,

I have TWO Druckbogen or sheets from: LEER–Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten. The sheet is unfolded and the measures are 34 x 48.5 centimeters. It has 16 notes on it, so four series. You see front and back of the sheet. My price is Euro 85,– for one sheet and for two sheets Euro 150,–, not including postage (I think it is about Euro 21,– for the EU).

It is always a bit “dangerous” to buy notes with a stamp or a perforation. Are they genuine or put someone a stamp on it or made a hole to make them more interesting? Even when they are mentioned in the catalogs.

Just bought a note from Neustadt/Orla with a stamp “Ungültig !” from a respected dealer. This note is not mentioned in the catalogs. I trust the seller, but who says it is genuine!

Never seen the perforation in the 25 Pf Wernigerode or in the catalogs. (The other notes are in my collection.)

But see the pictures of Apolda: They are known with one or two perforations and accompanied with or without a stamp “ungültig MUSTER”. I have some in my collection.

I have never seen the notgeld made from business cards for sale. They are extremely scarce/rare and seldom seen for sale.

Uncut sheets are uncommon too but they do appear for sale every now and again. Do you know the ‘MA-Shops’ site? That is a good reference for notgeld prices and quite often has scarcer pieces for sale, as it is a ‘shop’ of many banknote dealers. Watch out for over-priced items though!!
